Safety/Warning Labels

Chemical Drum Labels – Chemical Safety Labels – Hazmat Drum Labels – GHS

Northern Label understands the importance of chemical drum labels and chemical safety labels in the industrial workplace.

Northern Label understands the importance of chemical drum labels and chemical safety labels in the industrial workplace. Employees are handling drums and containers of potentially explosive and corrosive chemicals and biohazard materials, so safety is absolutely critical. Hazmat labels ensure employer compliance with the Right-to-Know regulation. Northern offers GHS, IMDG, NFPA, OSHA, and BS 5609 compliant labels. With the new GHS standard for chemical labels on the horizon for 2015, we can assist you with getting your chemical labels in compliance.

OSHA has adopted new hazardous chemical labeling requirements as a part of its recent revision of the Hazard Communication Standard

29 CFR 1910.1200 (HCS), bringing it into alignment with the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). These changes will help ensure improved quality and consistency in the classification and labeling of all chemicals, and will also enhance worker comprehension. As a result, workers will have better information available on the safe handling and use of hazardous chemicals, thereby allowing them to avoid injuries and illnesses related to exposures to hazardous chemicals.

Label Requirements

All Chemical Labels and Chemical Drum Labels Under the New GHS Standard Must Include:

Chem

1. Product Identifier

Chemical name exactly as it is on the SDS. If the mixture is covered by UN model regulations for transport of dangerous goods, the UN shipping name should also appear on the label.

Chem

2. Signal Word

The appropriate signal word should be printed on the drum label that corresponds to the class of the most severe hazard – “Danger” for more severe or “Warning” for less severe. The label should contain only one signal word.

Chem

3. Hazard Statements(s)

Standardized statements assigned to a hazard class and category describing the nature and degree of the hazard(s) of a chemical.

Chem

4. Pictograms*

The are nine GHS pictograms, shown above, to choose from that have common characteristics of the black symbol within a red diamond border. Each are intended to convey information about the hazards of a chemical. Note: Certain GHS pictograms should not be present together when pertaining to the same chemical hazard to avoid confusion. If a transport pictogram is present, a GHS pictogram for the same hazard should not be displayed.

Chem

5. Precautionary Statement(s)

Phrases describing recommended measures to be taken to minimize or prevent adverse effects resulting from exposure to hazardous chemical, or improper storage or handling of a hazardous chemical.

Chem

6. Supplier Identification

Name, address, and telephone number of the chemical manufacturer, importer, or distributor of the substance or mixture should be provided on the chemical drum label.

NFPA Labels

NFPA 704 Standard System for the Identification of the Hazards of Materials for Emergency Response is a standard maintained by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). In order to make consumers aware of the dangers of certain chemicals, the NFPA has come up with a system to indicate the health, reactivity, and flammability of chemicals.

Northern Label offers custom chemical safety labels corresponding to the NFPA hazard ratings noted below. This system includes the use of number and color codes in which red stands for flammability, yellow for reactivity, blue for health, and white for special precautions..

Hazard Ratings Summary:

Health – Blue

4 - Danger
3 - Warning
2 - Warning
1 - Caution
0 - No known hazard.

Reactivity – Yellow

4 - Danger
3 - Danger
2 – Warning
1 - Caution
0 – Stable

Flammability – Red

4 - Danger
3 - Warning
2 - Warning
1 - Caution
0 – Not combustible

Special Precautions – White

Oxy – Oxidizing Agent
W – Water Reactive

BS 5609 Complaint Labels

The British Standard BS 5609 is the Marine Immersion Label testing standard. It outlines durability requirements for pressure-sensitive labels used to identify hazardous chemicals being transported by sea. The BS 5609 certification is a two-part certification for both the label material and the printed information on the label. Both elements must be tested successfully, as evidenced by separate certifications, for a label to achieve the BS 5609 certification.
